When Budget is Not an Issue: Luxury Real Estate in Calgary

The real estate market for luxury homes in Calgary has noticeably grown recently.  Unfortunately, the $22-million palace -  the city’s most expensive home and the crown jewel of the millionaire’s row called Pump Hill Close -  owned by Alfred Balm is not for sale. But luxury doesn’t have to be as ostentatious as Balm’s 91-room, 15,450-square-foot mansion.

Buyers with no budget issues have a variety of homes and condos to choose from in the $1 million-plus range. The city’s economic climate makes it possible for local residents to get top jobs and move to more affluent communities. Also, because of its reputation as one of the most livable cities in the world, wealthy investors and business executives from around the world help generate the luxury boom.

Luxury and affluence have been part of the city’s real estate history. As early as the turn of 20th century, Calgary houses include classic Tudor and Colonial style. Communities such as Mount Royal and Elbow Park are two of the pioneers in luxury living. More recent developments include Lake Bonavista Estates and the McKenzie Lake which add the mixture of green space and comfort and convenience to the concept of high-end lifestyle.

Here are some of the choices per quadrant.

Southwest Calgary Luxury Real Estate

Among the four quadrants, Southwest Calgary has the largest collection of luxury homes with million dollar listings in more than fifty communities and neighborhoods.

The oldest luxury neighborhoods with classical houses are found in such communities like Mount Royal, Elbow Park, Bel Aire and Britannia. These are communities with country clubs and golf courses in the vicinity.  Wide green spaces and tree-lined avenues provide a sense of serenity and tranquility despite the business centers just few miles away.
Recent developments such as Aspen Woods, Discovery Ridge, Springbank Hill, and The Slopes, while not necessarily exclusive also include luxury homes in their listings.

Southeast Calgary Luxury Real Estate

Waterfront properties define the luxury houses in Southeast Calgary where houses have direct views and access to beautiful lakes and the Bow River. The Fish Creek Provincial Park, Calgary’s largest undeveloped green space, is also located here.
The neighborhoods here set the benchmark of lakeside community living with such developments as Lake Bonavista and McKenzie. There are several developments going on which will offer luxury houses for sale and luxury condos for sale as well.

Northwest Calgary Luxury Real Estate

Perhaps because of its vast layout, Northwest Calgary is the ideal quadrant for luxury houses. Majority of its 60 communities include luxury and high-end properties in their real estate listings from classical to modern developments. Lynx Ridge, Rocky Ridge Range and Tuscany represent the modern interpretations of green living combined with luxury and affluent qualities. Also, the homes for sale in such areas as Panorama Hills, Tuscany, Hamptons, Rocky Ridge, Bearspaw, Lynx Ridge and Valley Ridge include items with more than a million dollar price tags. There are waterfront homes in this area such as  Arbour Lake.

Northeast Calgary Luxury Real Estate

Although this quadrant is more popular for its homes which are family-sized and budget-friendly, there are several options for high-end properties. Coral Springs is a lakeside community of upscale homes. Homes in Northeast Calgary are near schools, shopping, parks, lakes and recreation centers.
With the real estate industry on the rise, it is foreseeable that in the future, more homes and condos will be built in all these Calgary quadrants with luxury in mind.
