The Southwood community was established in 1959. The subdivision belongs to Ward 11 and is represented in the city council by their Alderman, Brian Pincott. The Southwood neighbourhood's population in 2011 was 5,965 according to the census that took place that year. In a 2005 census, 15.9% of the community’s total households were earning in the low-income tier. Median household income in 2005 was $52,935.
Predominantly a single-family neighborhood, single-detached homes comprised 52% of the community’s total occupied private dwellings in 2006. Other housing properties include semi-detached homes, apartments, condominiums, and row houses. The 2006 census further showed that 65.1% of the residential properties were owned and only 34.9% were rented.
Southwood Neighbourhood Amenities
Commercial developments in the Southwood neighbourhood continue to expand. This includes the construction of the Southland Park complex. Home owners are also able to enjoy several amenities provided in the community. For recreational activities, Glenmore Reservoir and Fish Creek Provincial Park are within easy access. Southwood residents are able to access and visit the city’s various establishments using the Light Rail Transit System nearby. Home buyers can also use the other major transport routes for a convenient and hassle-free ride to the downtown area. The Southwood community association provides various recreational opportunities for the residents.
