Upper Mount Royal Community Homes
Mount Royal is one of Calgary’s most highly-esteemed residential communities. Lower Mount Royal is to the north and the Upper Mount Royal neighbourhood is in the south. They are separated by a steep slope that runs from the east-west direction, Royal Avenue and Cameron. Upper Mount Royal just happens to be one of Calgary’s most costly neighborhoods. This neighborhood used to be known as the “American Hill.” It offers modern houses and also 100-year-old homes. It is bordered by 17th Avenue SW on the north and 14th Street SW on the west. Surprisingly though, this community is not where the Mount Royal University is located.
Upper Mount Royal Neighbourhood Amenities
The Upper Mount Royal neighbourhood used to be the territory of Calgary’s American business elite, hence its former name - the American Hill. Upper Mount Royal has a lot of historic public gardens and parks such as Tomkins Park, which was established back in 1911. The Coste House is a popular estate in the area which used to be the home of Titanic survivors Vera and Bert Dick. It also was the home of Calgary’s first public automated toilet.
There’s a huge proportion of single-family detached homes, 87.2% of the buildings in Upper Mount Royal are single-family detached houses; while 88.7% in Lower Mount Royal are luxurious condos and spacious apartments. Based on 2001 statistics, 77.5% of houses here are for renting purposes.
17th Avenue is also known as the neighbourhood’s shopping district. It has more than 200 services, restaurants, and shops to offer home buyers. Some of the local favorites include the Gallery, 100% Legit, Blame Betty, and Gravity Pope. The traditional Italian eatery within the community, Buon Giorno Ristorante Italiano, well-known for its lasagna, can also be found in the area.
